Go For The Eyes - Easy on the eyes - Nice on the Ears |

Our latest Front Page Band answers to the name of Go For The Eyes. Fronted by the lovely Elise Roller (Vocals/Keys) and the fantastic Mr. Jeff Turner (Vocals/Guitar), Go For The Eyes is a band who delivers a sumptuous auditory sandwich of alternative pop-rock to their listeners that will wake up your libido, no matter how comatose it may be. GFTE's sounds have been described as "Sex Rock". We can't get into my crush on Elise here, but I would definitely second that. Their instrumental section contains the sort of wild precision you usually only get from progressive-rock bands.
I've been talking with Elise quite a bit lately, and one thing that stands out is her passion for her band, and her dedication to music. Where some bands book as many shows as humanly possible, Elise tells me they spend painful amounts of time in rehearsal and designing their show around the next venue. This is the reason we'll all be waiting a little longer to see them play. Make no mistake, these guys are a massive ticket, and their most recent show at the Marquee room on February 6th had completely sold out. I can't say enough for this band, so quit reading this article and listen for yourself:
In January 2010, Go For The Eyes made some internal changes. I'm told that the only two original members are male lead vocalist, Jeff Turner, and bassist, Eric Svilpis. Female lead vocalist, Elise Roller, was added to the mix in December 2009 after ending her solo career tour. Drummer, Nate Raboud & lead guitarist, Dylan Santimo, replaced former GFTE members in January 2010.
Go For The Eyes will be scheduling regular tour dates throughout Alberta starting in May, and, will be touring throughout British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba during the summer. They have plans to tour across Canada with their newly released album in the fall.
I caught up with Elise tonight and was given the opportunity to ask some very important questions:
J: "What is your favorite food?"
E: "I like Indian food, but I also like pizza."
J: "Pizza? Wat?"
E: "At any given time I have three frozen pizzas on hand, because I can't stand doing dishes, and well, I don't like cooking"
J: "What is the farthest away from home you've been?"
E: "I lived in the UK for a year, that was pretty far"
J: "Tell me you were doing something really interesting out there...lie if you have to"
E: "I was working at Warwick Castle, the greatest medieval castle in all of England, as a medieval maiden in costume I've fired a trebuchet, longbow and a crossbow on a daily basis. That's a true story
J:"you aren't... kidding, are you..."
E:"Nope, now are we going on a date or what?"
I also found out that Go For The Eyes had been in talks with a smaller New York indie record label, but couldn't come to an agreement on creative control and decided to stay their course. A good idea, I believe, because I cannot picture this group in any other way, and I mean, how can you go wrong having the sexiest female lead in town?
Go For The Eyes is:
Jeff Turner (Vocals/Guitar)
Elise Roller (Vocals/Keys)
Dylan Santimeau (Guitar)
Eric Svilpis (Bass)
Nathan Raboud (Drums)

Add them as a friend on myspace and facebook or stay tuned here for upcoming shows.

Makeshift Innocence - They're Local! |
|

A few of us loaded up and went down to Mount Royal College for a Haiti relief show last night. We went there to go check out a band I heard was making a shitload of noise out in BC as well as another local band that I'd never seen or heard of up until now. Makeshift Innocence opened the show and rocked the nuts and bolts off of everyone in attendance. For a small show with minimal capacity, this place was shaking.
I wanted to pass this along and get the word out about Makeshift Innocence, as they have a sizable following out here, and after seeing their show, I can see why. They blew the doors off of Wyckham house last night and also, any band that has this many hot chicks at their show will get props from the Calgaryunderground.com crew.
I talked with Makeshift Innocence's front man Jesse James Cameron last night, who mentioned that their online media is pretty mild acoustical stuff that gets amped up pretty huge when they play live. He also said he was really excited to be able to get the opportunity to help out with the Haiti relief effort, and was thrilled at the turnout of fans.
The musicianship and instrumental work of the band is phenomenal, complementing captivating vocal work, which in and of itself is refreshingly original. You'll see that these guys put a ton of hard work into their music whether it's live or on disc.
These guys have toured across Canada and just finished wrapping up with Goodbye Beatdown last night. Don't be fooled by the tameness of their youtube channel. These guys drop it on you hard. Tell your friends, and tell their friends.
Check these guys out and show some support for good local bands

Jordan Szoke leaves Kawasaki after failed negotiations, Defends #1 Title Anyways. |

Being fortunate enough to have a chat with one of the more prominent members of our motorcycle community this afternoon, I was shocked to learn that Jordan Szoke won't be on a Kawasaki sponsored bike for this year of the Parts Canada Superbike Series. We are a little bit late on this, but I'd much rather hear it from the horses mouth in situations like these, and it just so happens, the horses mouth is much closer than you might think.
Now, I've always enjoyed Szokes demeanor with respect to public relations, essentially; I'm not fucking around, I'm not feeding you a bunch of dismissive verbiage, this is what's going on, if you can't understand that, then you probably don't need to be reading this. This matter-of-fact approach came through again when describing negotiations with Kawasaki (text is linked to Roadracing World, click for full article)
Quote:
“They made me an offer that was pretty ridiculous,” said 32-year-old Szoke, who has a total of six Canadian Superbike Championships and is the all-time Superbike win leader. “No Championship bonus, no [salary], no expenses, no nothing, get [yourself] to the track, ride for free, only ride Superbike and then there were winnings. They would pay me [bonuses] for first, second and third.
“‘OK,’ I said, ‘I’ll do it just because I know it’s a bad situation. Hopefully in a year it will turn around. I want to work with Kawasaki. I’m loyal to the company.
“I said, ‘I’ll do it, but…’ They sell off the bikes at the end of the year. I said, ‘I want to buy one of the 600s.’ I have to take a truck and trailer to the races anyway because my girlfriend races. So I’ll bring a 600 and I’ll contest and defend my Number One plate on my own dime.
“All I wanted to do was collect the posted contingency. That would be enough to pay for my tires, at least. And the other big reason why I wanted to do that was because all of my personal [sponsor] contracts I would lose so much money in winnings and pay because they would cut them in half because they’re all based on racing two classes. So I’m trying to save every dollar I can now that I’m working for free and paying to go to the racetrack.
“Then they said, ‘No, we don’t want you doing that. Thanks for your service. We’re going to hire a different rider.’ Click. They hung up the phone.
“It was nasty, really. There was no discussion, no debating. It wasn’t like, ‘OK, can I not race the 600 and ride the Superbike only?’ ‘No, we’re not interested in your services. Bye, bye.’”

A little bit of insider information for some of you who may not know how contingencies work: Did you know manufacturers may not pay their riders what's posted [contingencies] (that's what contract negations are for), most think that's the case but it's all in your contract (weather the purses are larger, smaller or not at all)
From what it sounds like to me, Kawasaki wasn't going to pay Szoke a contingency if he bought and raced his own 600cc machine. Why? Who knows. One could also speculate that they may have had smaller purses than posted contingency for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in superbike and no championship bonus. On top of all of this, they've handed their racing program for '10 to an outsourced company called Competition Systems, who did the negotiations with Szoke, as opposed to direct dealings with Kawasaki. Sounds and looks to me like it was an attempt at putting an arms length between themselves and the situation. Probably a great idea, as I'm sure the majority of us roadracing fans couldn't deduce that Competition Systems isn't bound to Kawasakis biddings.
In reading another related article: http://insidemotorcycles.blogspot.co...nd-plates.html
It sounds like Jordan will have excellent, but expensive backup for 2010.
We're all well aware of the economic situation, but I'm sure if a rider has brought home 4 or 5 National Championships, it would afford a little more negotiation loyalty than a hang up.
Having said all this, loyalties for me are to a teams rider before the brand. I mean, Hayden rides a friggin Honda right?
Here's hoping that Waznie Racing, Jordan and Amy have another ass kicking nationals season. We support you guys.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I'm happy to inform all of you that the format and operations of this site will be drastically changing in the near future, and will be looking to cater to a larger audience. In order to do that, I believe it is necessary to provide Calgary with a more user-friendly and more attractive and informative environment that focuses on a broader scope of content.
I strongly recommend to our users to go through their private messages, look for anything you may need to keep or want to keep, copy it and save it in a separate text file. I also recommend doing the same for any of the threads you've seen in here and used for information in the past.
Since there is a good possibility that we will be transitioning out of a forum setup in the next 2 months, I strongly recommend getting on this as soon as possible.
I believe this is sufficient and diligent notice for our members. We appreciate the activity you've brought to our site and look forward to your continued support in the future.
Regards,
J
