Bigger Fish Than Guns: “We’ve been everywhere, and now we’re here”

Readers, I am proud to have another feature band on the front page. They are called Bigger Fish than Guns from Calgary; they won the X929 Xposure contest, taking home a gold medal in local musical excellence. We put whoever answered our email on the hot-seat with some very tough questions:

Cu: Where are you guys from?

BFTG: We are all originally from Calgary, although we have all spent time living in the greater Toronto area, Victoria, and Australia. Why did we move back? It sort of just happened that way.

Cu: How long have you been around as a band?

BFTG: Kevin Dorin (vocals) and Brendan Kearns (guitars) have been writing songs together since they were 15, however, in the last year BFTG formed with old friend Stephen Burchill (bass, guitar) and fellow Metalworks institute classmate of Kevin’s, Darren Benner on drums. So, I guess BFTG has been around for just over a year but two of the members have been writing and performing together under different names since they were 15.

Cu: Where have you played?

BFTG: We have had the opportunity to play SOS fest in Edmonton, Local 522, Republik and the FIS world cup in Calgary; a few stampede parties at different Penny Lane venues, a few others that I am also sure we are missing but that’s the gist of it…quite a few I guess considering we have only been playing together for just over a year…we try not to over saturate the Calgary market though… we agreed that it’s detrimental to a bands progress; especially in Calgary, in our opinion.

Cu: You know, Nickleback could have learned a thing or two from you guys, seriously.

Cu: Where’s that southern influence coming from? SRV?

BFTG: YES! cool that you picked up on the old southern feel…kinda hard not too I guess with the sound Texas T has (the single on X). I’d have to say that we all appreciate different flavours of the south, Kevin being heavily influenced by Ryan Adams, Stephen by old bluesmen such as Jr. Kimbrough, Muddy Watters, and yea SRV to an extent as well as John Mayer (myself as well on all counts) but personally I have taken a lot from southern California bands, especially when it comes to lyrics…we are all obsessed with surfing (besides Darren) so outside of Texas T there is a lot of surf vibe going around in our lyrics…pretending like we all didn’t move back to Calgary haha.

Cu: When is your next Calgary gig?

BFTG: We are playing the Xposure wrap up party in August and are planning a small tour in there somewhere which will most likely include an additional Calgary show in July. But mainly, we are busy tracking the last few demo’s for our up and coming album which we are heading to Vancouver to record in the early fall. Hopefully we get to Victoria, Vancouver, Nelson, Lethbridge, Canmore, Banff, Winnipeg and Saskatoon sometime before recording commences or after as well. Radio promotion is top on our list at this point to ensure we can travel further east and make it worth while.
